Eyelid Surgery
A rested refreshed expression – a common side effect of aging is significant laxity of the skin around the eyes (particularly on the eyelids). This causes skin on the upper lids to hang over the eyelashes and obscure the natural folds of the eyelids; it also causes puffiness on the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is helpful for eliminating surplus skin and “opening up” the eyes so they look awake and rested.
What Is a Blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excess skin and fat surrounding the upper and lower eyelids. This gives the appearance of brighter, more youthful eyes.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
- You may be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery if you:
- Have loose, hanging skin on the upper eyelids.
- Obscured vision due to overhanging eyelids.
- Puffiness/bags/dark circles under the lower eyelids.
- You should be at or close to your ideal weight, with a BMI less than 35.
- The best candidates are non-smokers. Smoking increases the chance of complications including impairment in wound healing.
The Procedures
- Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis in a hospital or surgery center under general anesthesia.
- Dr. Gupta will begin by numbing the area where the incisions will be placed.
- Through the incisions in the eye crease, he will remove excess skin and fat.
- The incision will be closed in multiple layers.
- Incisions will be covered with steri-strips.
- There will be some bruising, swelling and mild discomfort.
The Incisions
Blepharoplasty
- Incisions for the upper eyelid will be concealed in the eye crease
- Incisions for the lower eyelid will be along the lower lash line or along the lower inner portion of the eyelid – this approach is called transconjunctival and results in no scars along the lower lid

One great thing about eyelid surgery is that the recovery time is relatively short, you will have some bruising or swelling around the eyes, but the pain and discomfort is very minimal.

Eyelid surgery is designed to remove the extra skin typically from your upper lower eyelids to remove any extra fat that may be providing some extra bulge in that area and overall it’s just a rejuvenated look. The most common compliments patients will hear after this procedure is that they look less tired, they just look more youthful and patients love that.
